How to Build a Succulent Wreath That Actually Lasts

Wow I’m am actually writing a blog post!! I think it’s been over two years maybe longer since I’ve written a blog post, and I’m excited it’s about this Succulent Wreath I made in the Spring!

A lot of things has changed since I started Crafts by Courtney back in 2013. I started a new business last year Sprout & Bloom where I do plant related events. It’s been such a great opportunity and I just love it! I’ve been thinking why not start the blog up again and show people how to make the things I’ve been selling and doing at my workshops!

One of my favorite things I love about this business is I get to be creative with plants, it’s my love of DIY combined with my love of plants!

So let’s get started!

Succulent Wreath Supplies Needed:

  • Wire Wreath
  • Terra Cotta Pots
  • Soil
  • Floral Wire
  • Floral Pins
  • Perlite
  • Reindeer Moss
  • Succulents

Getting Started

Since this was a project I originally did years ago with faux succulents I just pulled all the stuff out so I can start fresh with real soil and succulents.  This is the original faux succulent wreath tutorial so you can see how to add the terra cotta pots!

Step 1 of Succulent wreath

Step 1 – Succulents

For this project the succulents I order on Amazon are the best size and they are delivered within a couple days! Fits perfectly in the terra cotta pots and still has room to grow.

I’m sure if you have a local greenhouse in the area that sells them this size that would be great, of course I’m all about shopping local as well!

Step 2 – Adding Your Succulents

To secure the succulents into place I pulled the succulent out of the pot, and I used some floral wire and wrapped it around the base of the succulents.

I made sure to cut my floral wire extra extra long so I can pull the remaining wire through the bottom of the terra cotta pot. Then I wrapped the remainder around the wire wreath (this will also help keep the moss in place when it’s time to add).

This will ensure that the succulent is not going everywhere! If you do it right, it wont move at all.

Then I went around all the pots and added more soil to each pot.  Make sure to press the soil in good so that soil won’t go anywhere.

With all my soil that I use for succulents I add half a bag of soil and then I add perlite.
“Perlite is used for succulents to dramatically improve soil drainage, aeration, and prevent root rot by creating air pockets and keeping the mix loose, mimicking their native arid environments, which succulents need to thrive and avoid soggy roots”

Step 3 – Adding Moss

Next it’s time to add your moss! I love using the reindeer moss for a lot of my succulent projects, I think it really finished the look off.

I pushed the moss around the soil and tucked it under the succulents, but to really keep the moss in place and help keep the soil in place I used floral pins. That moss isn’t going anywhere once you add the floral pins!

Then I started filling in the bare spots of the wire wreath with the moss as well.

Finishing Touches

Once everything is secured into place you can water it now or if the soil around the succulents was already mosit you can wait a couple weeks to water.

One thing I always tell everyone at all my workshops is you don’t have to water succulents a lot. I water most of my succulents projects once a month. I think most people think they need to water them like a house plant.

Finished Succulent Wreath

Honestly this is my favorite succulent project I worked on this year. I was so excited to finally recreate it with real succulents.

This Succulent wreath is a great project to work on and I plan on doing a workshop this Spring! I made it last Spring and almost 10 months later it’s still holding strong!

I made a video on my Instagram page showing in a little more detail how to make it!  I hope you enjoyed the tutorial and let me know if you have any questions!!
