I know it’s a little late to be posting a Halloween craft. But when I came across this Pottery Barn Skull on Stand, I knew I had to make a knockoff! Since I’m a contributor for Make it Fun I have a great stockpile of their products.
So I knew I would have everything to make this Skull Craft. I had some great Metallic paint from DecoArt that I got from them back in April from SNAP ( a blogging conference). I have been waiting for the perfect opportunity to use it. This was it!!
My Inspiration!
Getting Started
I pulled out some of my supplies, this cool foam skull and of course my foam block. Both of these you can find at any craft store right now.
Step 1 – Paint Head
Now let’s paint our head. I did two different heads, a gold and copper. I painted on 2 coats of my metallic paint, I let each one dry an hour.
Then I went over the head with black paint and a sponge brush (lightly). Once the black paint was dry I went over the head again with the metallic paint. Again, I lightly went over the head with the metallic paint. You want to make sure that black paint is showing through. I think it gave it a really cool effect, don’t you?!!
Step 2 – Cover Foam Block in Smooth Finish
In the picture, the skull is sitting on a foam block. I decided I wanted to cover my foam block with Smooth Finish. I did one coat of the Smooth Finish and let dry 4 hours. Once it was dry I sanded it down with light sand paper.
Step 3 – Paint Foam Block
Now it’s time to paint the foam block!! Of course I used some black paint for this step.
Step 4 – Put it Together
Once your foam block is dry it’s time to put it together.
I was trying to figure out what to use to attach the skull to the foam block. I really thought it looked like a thread spool. I have a TON of them on hand. I painted it with my gold metallic paint and let dry 20 minutes. Then I used hot glue to place it all together!!
Finishing Touches
It might just be me, but I think it turned out really cute. Way, way cheaper than the original to make. That one was $100 and I think it’s on sale for $40 right now.
I’m really glad I took the time to make this. I’m having a Halloween party this weekend and it will look great with my decor.
I hope you enjoyed this weeks posts, I can’t wait to finish up decorating the house for my spooky Halloween party!!
