When we moved into our home last year, I really wanted to incorporate a “READING NOOK” into the play area.
We have a TON a beautiful books the boys have received from baby showers and birthday parties, and I wanted a nice place to display them.
Plus, it’s the perfect area for the kids to grab a book, sit down and read. We have HOURS of fun going through the books and deciding which one they are going to read. They also have LOTS of fun taking them all down. But hey, that’s kids for you!
They also have…fun taking them all down. But hey, that’s a kid for you!
I wanted to break down my reading nook and explain where I purchased EVERYTHING. In case anyone wants to create their OWN, they can see it’s super easy and very inexpensive to recreate.
READ Letters
I went to Michaels and grabbed some LARGE wooden letters and painted them green. I used some Command Strips to hang my letters on the wall.
Have I mentioned before how much I LOVE Commend Strips? I use them for everything!!
Framed Book Covers
I really LOVED the idea of framing a few beautiful books covers to add a little something extra to the reading nook. I found these great colorful frames at Ikea for $2.00 each, TOTAL bargain!
I went with, “Puff the Magic Dragon“, “Where the Wild Things Are” and “Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too?” books. Then, I PLACED the books’ covers in my Ikea frames.
Once again I used my “HANDY DANDY” Command Strips to hang my frames on the wall.
Ikea Picture Ledges
These picture ledges from Ikea are the best to display books. I wanted the kids to be able to SEE the front of the books when they’re picking ’em out. These shelves were $14.99 a piece (not a bad price for something you plan on leaving up for a LONG time).
Too bad I couldn’t use the Command Strips for these…I had to call in the BIG GUNS to help me out (the hubby).
Ikea Children’s Table and Chairs
Here’s another great buy from Ikea…our children’s table and chairs, we got the set for $20.00 and it was one of the BEST purchases! This table works out perfect (even with my ROUGH and TOUGH boys).
I’m planning on giving it a little makeover in the near future!

This is what the table looks like MOST of the time.
Putting It All Together
The boys have such a GREAT time looking through their books. Here’s my middle son having a little quiet time…playing with the HUNGRY caterpillar I made for his, The Very Hungry Caterpillar themed birthday party.

I had to sneak these pictures of him…seconds later, he was gone!
This really IS one of my favorite spots in the house. I’m a HUGE book reader and I want to instill reading in my boys (like my parents did with me).
Even if we CAN’T sit down everyday to read, I want them to be inspired to pick out a special book and take time to THEMSELVES and get familiar with it.
I’m constantly rotating the books out from their bedrooms to our reading nook (so they are seeing DIFFERENT books all the time). I hope this motivated you to create a special reading space in your home.
If you’ve already made your OWN reading nook, I would LOVE for you share!
